The Hon. Jesse Helms
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Mr. Senator:

I must admit to have read your book six times over the many years that it has been in my possession. Although much of it seems out-of-date, there is alot of it that applies to today’s government and alot of it is nothing short of prophecy. Almost everything you said the Congress would do wrong, they did!

As a practicle Christian, I see the need for great reformations in the ways the government deals with the people. May I quote from your chapter The Santa Clause Syndrome? "Nowhere at any time did Christ mention a government welfare program, let alone endorse one." This I see as striking at the fundamental flaw in modern government. Why should I, and you, hardworking members of America, be forced (what other word is there for it?) to pay those peoples ways who don’t want to work or who don’t try to find work because they don’t want any skills or who have too many children for their own legitimate jobs to support?!

You can see that I feel as strongly on this as you do. I am no longer going to remain silence on this issue, however! You know as well as I that giving folks money takes away their Christian will to work for their wages—small wages is no excuse—the wages of sin is death! See the connection?

Why, also, does Congress continue to borrow money from our enemies of the past West Germany and Japan? Our economy lies in ruins while they thrive on the interest we are paying them? And what are we getting out of it all? Nothing but lazy people on welfare!

I am also worried about Gorbochev’s new power position. It seems that he now has more power then Stalin and Lenin and Menchelvo put together. This can’t be good. Remember what those others did! (Isn’t that the mark of the beast on his head? It might as well be!)

I want to help protect our future from the damage done by the liberal atrocities of welfare and easy-spending. What can I do to help stop it? Please write me with instructions and please send me an autographed photograph, "To my dear friend, Phil, Let’s Keep America #1, Jesse Helms!" so I can put it on my wall. Times are tough, let’s keep you in office! Helms in 1991!

A true fan,

Phil Saunders
