Official FAQ for alt.consciousness.abstinence
A whole host of answers to the questions
that really matter to alt.consciousness.abstinence groupies!
In any newsgroup (new or old), especially one as important as
alt DOT consciousness DOT abstinence, there invariably comes the inevitable stream of questions
relating to the issues of importance addressed in that group. Normally, some helpful and experienced person
or persons compile a FAQ (or
list of "Frequently Asked Questions" along with their answers) so that the
same questions don't get asked over and over again by all newcomers (or "newbies")
to the group. Immediately following the miraculous birth of
alt.consciousness.abstinence, the SATA Board chose to produce the basic outline
of a FAQ for the group with a few key questions and answers. However, in
true SATA style, they also decided to seek contributions from Members and
non-Members alike. Our FAQ will therefore start small and then grow over
time with the growth of participation in the newsgroup.
If you have a question and/or answer for this FAQ, email us at the address at
the bottom of the page. Of course, you may also
want to send your contribution to alt.consciousness.abstinence. Even if you're not a
Member,
please don't hesitate to forward us your entry or contribute to the
newsgroup. We won't reveal your name or email address if you write to us here--we'll just
include your question and/or answer in the FAQ!
Now, let's see what sorts of questions people like yourself have been asking--and
answering!

What is the history of this important
newsgroup?
My news server doesn't carry
alt.consciousness.abstinence--what can I do about it?
Excellent first question! Here's a step-by-step guide:
1) Find out whom to contact. It could be that there is a direct email address for your newsgroup server administrator. You can usually check your ISP documentation or go onto the web and check your ISP's site. Go for contact
information, and if there's not an email address or phone number specifically for the newsgroup server
administrator, then try "comments" or "suggestions" or simply call your ISP and ask.
2) If you get the email address or phone number, simply write or say: "I'd appreciate your adding alt.consciousness.abstinence to the newsgroup server. I'd very much like to take part in discussions in that newsgroup. Thanks."
3) They should add it: it's as simple as that. You're one of their customers and it's no skin off their backs to add that group to please you. If it isn't added within a week, then contact them again, preferably by phone, to ask them
when (not if) they will have it online.
Good luck in getting the message about alt.consciousness.abstinence spread!

What is the Official Charter for
alt.consciousness.abstinence?
"This newsgroup is dedicated to all those who are seeking to establish
or strengthen their personal relationship with Abstinence. The term 'Abstinence' of course means a lot of different things to a lot of
different people--that's the real reason it can bring so many together in common
cause. And that's where this newsgroup can really help. With topics
embracing the entire range of human experience, this newgroup will serve as a
forum for heated discussions, ardent debates, inspirational instruction, and
supportive commentary."

Do I have to be a Member of SATA to join the newsgroup?
No, but you may find it helpful. Why not visit our
Membership page by clicking here and sign

What if I'm still trying to figure out what to abstain
from--can I still join the newsgroup?
You do not have to be an Abstainer to join in the discussions taking place in
alt.consciousness.abstinence. You only have to have an interest in the
topic.

What is the history of this
important newsgroup?
Moments after the TASP Board decided that we should propose a Usenet newsgroup
catering specifically to people everywhere who value Abstinence, work was begun
to make alt.consciousness.abstinence a reality. What follows is a
step-by-step account of the exciting process of getting our newsgroup online.
STEP ONE:
We already knew that there was no one single newsgroup out there
(among the myriad groups available) that addressed Abstinence as we would have
it addressed, so the first thing we did was to search among the existing
newsgroups for a suitable sub-hierarchy upon which to attach our proposed
group. We chose the "alt" hierarchy because it's the easiest to
get proposals accepted for. Then we found the sub-hierarchy "alt.consciousness".
That's where we thought it'd be best to append our proposed group. Thus
our proposed group gained the full name of alt.consciousness.abstinence.
STEP TWO:
We wrote our first proposal and sent it to
alt.config, the
proper place for such proposals. For the record we're including the exact
posting of the first proposal sent to alt.config by X-Rom:

Proposal to create a ground-breaking new newsgroup:
alt.consciousness.abstinence

alt.consciousness.abstinence
Discussion of the many meanings of Abstinence
Charter:
This newsgroup is dedicated to all those who are seeking to establish
or strengthen their personal relationship with Abstinence. The term
"Abstinence" of course means a lot of different things to a lot of
different people--that's the real reason it can bring so many together

With topics embracing the entire range of human experience, this
newsgroup will serve as a forum for heated discussions, ardent
debates, and supportive commentary--a secure and wholesome refuge from
all that's bad in life.
Justification:
My own organization, the Total Abstinence Society of Penn, is but one
small part of a wider global interest in Abstinence. I believe that
many of our own members, as well as people belonging to other such
groups (and even non-affiliated persons), will be adding
alt.consciousness.abstinence to their list of favorite newsgroups as
soon as it becomes a reality.
I'd greatly value your views on this proposal.

How many people are discussing the topic in existing groups, this should be
the major factor in justifying a new newsgroup.

The TASP Board had considered these options, but it was decided that a
newsgroup would serve its aims better. And we shall press on!

Yes, but they do come. That's a fact. Especially when there's a
ready-made audience with a keen interest.

Our Members continuously monitor nearly 35,000 newsgroups (each
interested Member is assigned 10 to monitor), and many of them (i.e.,
our Members) are also active contributors. The TASP Board, acting on
suggestions from Members, has concluded that a newsgroup that deals
specificially with Abstinence would profit everyone. That is why the
proposal for alt.consciousness.abstinence has been made.

Good point. But we're pretty easy going as to what Members contribute
to the site, and some in fact say just what you've said (some in fact
prefer to abstain from Abstinence, a choice we likewise respect). So
the openness of a newsgroup is not something we fear, but rather
embrace!

We are learning more by the minute! We'll be taking into account
these and all other comments (including those by the person with the
CH of Hawk) in our re-drafted proposal.

Thanks again. We'll be providing numerical justification in our
re-drafted proposal.

After this series of helpful messages, all was quiet in
alt.config on the subject of alt.consciousness.abstinence, but the TASP Board
was hard at work acting on the advice it received from the
"net-heads".
STEP THREE:
The second draft of the proposal was then prepared, and, after the
usual week's wait from the presentation of the first proposal, it was sent for
consideration in alt.config. For the record we're also including the exact
posting of the second proposal sent to alt.config by X-Rom:

Second-stage proposal to create a ground-breaking new newsgroup:
alt.consciousness.abstinence
Thus:
alt.consciousness.abstinence
Discussion of the many meanings of "Abstinence"
Charter:
This newsgroup is dedicated to all those who are seeking to establish
or strengthen their personal relationship with Abstinence. The term
"Abstinence" of course means a lot of different things to a lot of
different people--that's the real reason it can bring so many together
in common cause. And that's where this newsgroup can really help.
With topics embracing the entire range of human experience, this
newsgroup will serve as a forum for heated discussions, ardent
debates, inspirational instruction, and supportive commentary.
Justification:
"Abstinence" as an explicit topic of discussion figures in a great
many current contributions to newsgroups worldwide--on average over a
three-month period (5/1/99-8/1/99) 16 direct (and relevant) mentions
of the term daily--sometimes as high as 30 in one day. What's more,
it can reasonably be inferred that actual interest in issues involving
Abstinence extends well beyond these figures--i.e., a great many more
Usenet postings address "Abstinence" without explicitly using that
term. For example, a search over the same time frame for "Abstain"
yields roughly 25 entries each day that are directly relevant to the
concerns expressed in the above Charter, without also containing the
overlap term "Abstinence". Given these facts, it is clear that many
people (from the ranks of our own and similar organizations and from
among the broader public) will be adding alt.consciousness.abstinence
to their list of favorite newsgroups as soon as it becomes a reality.
I'd greatly value your views on this re-drafted proposal.

Of course, answering as we did all of the concerns of the
"net-heads", we did not expect any responses to our second draft of
the proposal. So we moved on to the next step.
STEP FOUR:
We sent the following "control" message to create our
newsgroup.

But just as things seemed to be going our way, in stepped trouble.
The following "rmgroup" (i.e., "remove group") control
message was sent by someone using the name Jay
Denebeim. For those of you who aren't in the know, a "rmgroup"
control message is a plea by a news-server administrator to have a newsgroup
struck off the list of other news-server administrators. Clearly this Jay
Denebeim, who has with deliberate and unconscionable prejudice tried to
remove alt.consciousness.abstinence before it even has a chance to see the light
of day, is very much out of touch with the reason that only purest Abstinence
can provide. His "rmgroup" control message, which contains three
of the most offensive and hateful misrepresentations any member of the TASP
Board has ever witnessed, is reproduced for the record below:

Luckily, this Jay Denebeim
is unlikely to be successful in his unsavory plot to blackball
alt.consciousness.abstinence. As few if any ISPs will listen to him
(his questionable reputation having long preceded him everywhere in the Usenet
universe), his envy-born libels will fall impotent upon the ground before the
feet of the temperate righteous!
STEP FIVE:
The newsgroup is now a reality and will likely be added soon to your news
server, regardless of the ill-conceived machinations of Jay Denebeim. If you don't see it there, be sure to contact your ISP and request
that it be added right away. The future success of
alt.consciousness.abstinence depends on you!
Why not subscribe to alt.consciousness.abstinence
